Considered next in line for the coveted position, she reasoned with herself that if she could get through just the opening night performance at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, she could prove herself capable. She hid the injury, afraid she would lose her only opportunity to become principal for American Ballet Theatre (ABT). While rehearsing for The Firebird, a highly physical performance with a large number of jumps, she began experiencing searing pain in her left leg. Six years ago, Misty Copeland's ballet career almost came to a dramatic end. ![]()
